Perhaps we have some double-speak here and I may, as you suggested, have written up Carter wrongly.
I quote: "Obama's spokesman Robert Gibbs moved this week to calm temperatures after Carter said much of the criticism levelled at Obama, America's first Black President, was the result of racism.
I quote further:" In an interview on NBC on Tuesday, 84 year old Carter said he thought that "an overwhelming proportion of the intensely demonstrated animosity toward President Barack Obama, is based on the fact that he's a black man,he's African American."

Carter, whether speaking in support or showing veiled criticism has stirred up a wasp's nest and should have kept out of it!

Mugabe is little more than a rabble-rouser, who has almost single-handedly destroyed a once highly prosperous country. I hope that the British Labour Party feel well satisfied with the results of their stupidity.
After all, it was they who were responsible for bringing about the downfall of the Ian Smith government.
Wholly desirable, Smith's government may not have been, but at least the country prospered and would have continued to do so had he have remained in power.

Don't be so pessimistic and judgemental. There are still a lot of smart, hardworking, wonderful people out there. The very fact that these particular stories you highlight make it into the news is testament to the fact that they are not the norm- and the overwhelming reaction across all sections of the media and the web has been revulsion at what those women did. This would not be the case if people tolerated this kind of behaviour.
Your view of British people today is based on a minority that just happen to have a high media profile. And just because someone may be a fat, chain smoking wife does not mean they are also a bad person.

You wanna thank the Americanisation of this country for that, which is basically look after number one and sod everyone else (including increasingly your kids for a lot of people). Whenever they look at statistics (teenage pregnancy rates, drug use etc.) they always compare us with the rest of Europe and we're always top (or is that bottom) of the list. They compare us with Europe in part for sensationalism I know, but it's pointless. We're part of Europe in name only, really we're a wannabe 51st state of America. We're still behind America in these polls, but we're catching up fast so look on the bright side and make the most of how good things are at the moment because they are only going to get worse.

LOL. Nice post. Re: bLiars motley crew, all I can say is crap keeps craps company. I do think the immigration issue is highly manipulated though, as it provides a Joe Moore like useful and mute target to stop us thinking about REAL abuse of the hospitals and schools issues. I can accept that there will be abuses of the system, but I question its significance. I do think that bLiar does need to take the blame. 10 years! Thats a long time. Few have been privilaged to cling tooth 'n nail to power like he's managed to do.

Most other PM's have had to do far more in far shorter a term.

Thing is with Tony 'blood drinker' bLiar is that really, he's abandoned any notion long ago about the domestic chores and instead thought he can book himself a place in the annals of 'Compendium of Great and Glorious Leaders' by setting off on adventures in the non-white 'uncivilised' world out there.

Well, he's near to the front cover all right, but in a much different publication, 'Mordreds Tome of Murderers, Butchers and Villians'

You are right about Blair, recent poll figures show his party heading for a catastrophic defeat, followed by fragmentation. This would leave him discredited as a politician with the Iraq debacle his only legacy.

The execution was not unexpected (that doen't make it any more acceptable of course.) The real shock for me over the holiday was the attack by British forces on the Basra Serious Crimes Squad H.Q.
Now OK we know the Iraqi police had not really got their heads round the idea of what a serious crimes squad does, but these are the people, we are told, who will be taking over resposibility for law and order sometime in 2007.
I get the feeling someone has been lying to us (again.)

I disagree. Figures suggest that many wear the full veil.
I was making a statement saying: Get modern. I was not condemning the veil. In South Africa, where I come from, immigrants are requested to assimillate with the community they are going to live in.Most Muslims in Kwa-Zulu Natal do not wear a full veil--it would be regarded as anathema.

As to point 4:Yes, I agree, I am sick of the Hilary Armstrongs and the like who feel they must "add" their tuppence worth to the debate. It would be good if they just shut up!

Incredible. And I write as a white British, ex christian atheist:

1. Wearing a veil is not "making a demand."

2. Very few Muslim women in Britain wear a veil. Many dress in the same way as you say they do ion Egypt and the Lebanon.

3. Many British Muslims, women and men, feel threatend by the majority population - being treated en masse as potential terrorists,with hysterical campaigns against them in the right wing press - campaigns that are never attacked by mainstream politicians. And they feel alienated by the UK's horrendoeus foreign policy, eg Iraq, and supporting Isreal over Lebanon.

4. In this context, the veil issue is a deliberate distraction by the political establishment.

Sorry, but you are missing my point: I am saying that as Middle Eastern women become more liberal in terms of dress, British Muslims appear to be aping the most demanding of restrictions on dress. Is this a Pakhistani thing or are there other influences that insist on this drab cover-up? Are British Muslims more Muslim than many Middle Eastern countries? Why?

I am not telling Muslims what to wear--I am suggesting that Muslim women in Britain are segregating themselves by sticking to old traditions that are dying out in liberal Middle Eastern countries. Or, is it the fault of the men again?

well i think people should be allowed to wear what they want.
THe united kingdom is supposed to be a place where freedom of speech and expression is allowed.
Its bound to cause upset if someone tells some one else what to wear.
why they are many reasons why they should be or should not be worn the fact remains that you cant start telling people what to wear. Its their choice not ours or anyone elses. Does anyone remember when their mum or dad told them to wear something they did not like as a child. It was most likely to have made you feel terrible. well its no different being an adult.

I kind of gave up hope.

The Dafur crisis has been going on for 18 months is it now? It's been a long time i know that.

The UN can't intervene unless it's invited - and that's not likely to happen.

NATO is primarily a european defence force, so is unlikely to act.

And unilateral action by an independent state? That wont get votes like a war on terror. Call me cyncial, but i fear that's how politicians think.

The Africa Corps are doing their best, but it's an uphill, and unwinnable task from where i can see unfortunately.

Another Rwanda? Quite possibly.
